California has real problems

Our lawmakers should

focus on them.

Instead of wasting time and telling us how to bag our groceries, Lawmakers should be working on our real problems, including a huge budget deficit, home foreclosures, and millions of workers without jobs.

IN THE NEWS:
CA Senate Rejects Costly "Bag Ban Bill" (AB 1998) (News Release, September 1, 2010)

A broad coalition of Californians, including the California State Conference of the NAACP, the California Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, the California Manufacturers and Technology Association, and the American Chemistry Council, today applauded the California State Senate as it rejected a bill to ban plastic bags and place a hidden tax on paper bags..... Opposition to "Bag Ban Bill" (AB 1998) Near 500 Strong: Small Grocers, Retailers Lead the Pack (News Release, August 20, 2010)

Opposition to AB 1998, the so-called “bag ban bill,” is growing rapidly across the state. Hundreds of businesses, many of them small grocers and retailers have joined forces with manufacturing associations, chambers of commerce and plastic bag makers statewide to send a clear message to Sacramento: start focusing on the real problems facing Californians. ..... Leave Grocery Bags Alone (North County Times, August 19, 2010)

Really, this is why Assemblywoman Julia Brownley thinks her constituents sent her to Sacramento? To ban plastic bags?  While the state budget impasse has now reached 50 days, the Santa Monica Democrat has busied herself promoting her bill that would ban plastic grocery bags throughout California, and impose a 5-cent fee on paper bags..... Legislators off target with bag bill (Our Weekly Commentary, August 12, 2010)

Having worked in grocery stores for more than 20 years, I’ve asked more than a few customers—“paper or plastic?”  That 20- year-old question now has made its way to Sacramento, where apparently our legislators don’t think we’re capable of answering it for ourselves..... (Read More)

We ought to bag the plastic bag tax (NPR Commentary, August 5, 2010)

Some cities have tried to curb the proliferation of what some call "the urban tumbleweed" by charging consumers for plastic bags at the checkout aisle. Commentator Susan Lee says that's not the way to go.... (Listen/Read More)

First They Came For the Plastic Bags (Americans for Tax Reform, August 2, 2010)

The California Senate Appropriations Committee is set to hold a hearing today on Assembly Bill 1998, legislation that would ban all plastic and paper shopping bags statewide. Never mind the 880 pound gorilla in the room that is the state's $20 billion dollar overspending problem ...... (Read Article)

Banning plastic bags will kill California jobs, won't help the environment (San Jose Mercury News, August 2, 2010)

The state Senate is considering a bill banning plastic carryout bags. This legislation would tax consumers, forcing them to buy paper or reusable bags, and create an expensive new bureaucracy at a time of record deficits. The bill is consuming the time of our state government, while it still hasn't passed a budget.......

$20 billion in debt, 12 percent jobless, no budget -- and we ban grocery bags?

A recent Field Poll found that 79 percent of Californians believe the state is on the wrong track -- the highest rating in the venerable history of the survey....... (Read Article)

Unintended consequences of a plastic bag ban (LA Times Editorial June 29, 2010)

The Times' editorial board and others who support banning plastic bags are entitled to their own opinions, but not their own facts. Before the California Legislature makes any decision on this issue, let's carefully consider what the economic and scientific facts are.... (Read Article)

Just the Facts

The State Senate is about to vote on a bill to police how you carry your groceries home from the store. AB 1998 would require every single Californian who buys food or other items from supermarkets, drug stores or convenience stores to PAY for PAPER bags. The bill would BAN PLASTIC bags and FINE ANY STORE that gives you a plastic or even a paper bag for free! California has real problems, including a huge budget deficit, home foreclosures, and millions of workers without jobs. Lawmakers should be working on real problems, not wasting their time on legislation to tell us how to bag our own groceries. View our new ad, "Trouble," here.

New Tax, New Bureaucracy

AB 1998 requires grocers to sell consumers paper grocery bags for as much as $0.10 EACH. In this economy, can California families afford what is, essentially, another new tax? On top of that, the state would have to spend one and a half million dollars of our money each year to create a new plastics enforcement bureaucracy. It’s more big government we just can’t afford.

Widely Opposed by Business Groups
and Consumers

A strong and diverse coalition opposed to AB 1998 is active and growing. Consumers, business owners and Chambers of Commerce across California are uniting to stand up for consumers. Join the coalition
